The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) is an important body under the Department of Local Government. The Department of Public Health Engineering was established in 1935 with the responsibility of developing public health through safe water supply. Later in 1945 it was added to the responsibility of providing sanitation services. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the government first focused on rehabilitating the damaged water supply and sanitation systems and then started installing new infrastructure through the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE). Vested on. In addition, the Department provides technical assistance to the Union Council for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Infrastructure Maintenance through the WATSAN Committee, provides necessary assistance for strengthening health care and development of the surrounding environment. As a result of urbanization, the demand for municipal water supply and sanitation is increasing. In order to meet this demand, the department is assisting the municipalities in planning and institutional development under technical assistance including construction of water supply and sanitation infrastructure through pipelines. The Department of Public Health Engineering is also carrying out drainage, fecal sludge management and solid waste management based works in the municipalities. Besides, it has been implementing necessary activities to maintain safe water supply and sanitation system in case of emergency due to floods, cyclones, epidemics etc.
